What are Categories?
|
Categories are a way of organizing your articles into groups and making your blog easier to navigate. When posting or editing an article, you have the option of classifying it under one or more categories. Your readers can then choose to read all the articles in your blog, or only those posted under a specific category.
Once you have created categories, new posts can be added directly to the appropriate section in your blog.
The Categories section of the Post Article page
The Categories section allows you to select one or more categories under which the article will be posted.
Subcategories are listed in a way that shows the categories to which they belong. For example, consider the category "Food and Drink" if it has a subcategory called "Beer", it would be listed in the Categories list as "Food and Drink/Beer". If "Beer" in turn had a subcategory called "Premium", it would be listed as "Food and Drink/Beer/Premium".
The default category for articles is Main Page and whenever you start a new article, its checkbox is selected.
Note that an article must be under at least one category. If you clear all the categories and then try to save the article, you will get an error message asking you to select at least one category.

What is Bubbling Up?
You can choose to have an article bubble up to a higher category. This means that an article appears in its category and any categories that contain it, all the way up the hierarchy of categories.
For example, consider the categories "Music/Rock/Fifties". If an article posted in the "Fifties" category was allowed to bubble up, it would appear in all three categories. If it was not allowed to bubble up, it would only appear in the "Fifties" category.
Bubbling up is done on a per-article basis you can post one article to a category that bubbles up, followed by another article to the same category that doesn't bubble up.
To specify that you want an article to bubble up: click the Bubble up to higher categories checkbox. To prevent an article from bubbling up, clear the checkbox.
Note: If an article bubbles up into a restricted category, it will only be visible to those readers who have permission to read that category. See Restricted categories and photo albums for more information.
The Categories section in the Edit Article page
The Categories section on the Edit Article page is similar to that on the Post Article page.
The categories under which the article has been posted are selected. You can change the article's categories by clicking or clearing the category checkboxes in the list. You can also change whether the article bubbles up by clicking or clearing the Bubble up to higher categories checkbox.
The difference between the Categories section on the Post Article page and the Edit Article pages is that the Edit Article page also features a Current Categories section. This section lists the categories under which the article has been posted as a set of links. Clicking on a category's link takes you to the Post Manager page, which lists all the entries posted under that category.
